Background & Journey

Michael discovered his passion for workspace design while working on his first commercial project—a cramped Mong Kok office that he transformed into a thriving design studio. That success changed everything. It showed him what’s possible when you combine practical problem-solving with creative vision.

He studied Interior Design at the School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, then pursued postgraduate work in Commercial Space Planning at the Asia Pacific Institute of Design. But it’s the real-world experience—over 14 years of it—that shaped his approach to design.

Michael’s specialty emerged naturally. He witnessed Hong Kong’s dramatic shift toward collaborative working environments and became obsessed with solving the unique challenges of the city’s commercial interiors. Tsuen Wan’s warehouse districts particularly fascinated him. These industrial spaces, with their high ceilings and raw character, offered tremendous potential. He’s spent years perfecting the art of converting them into modern, functional coworking environments that actually work.

His portfolio includes over 60 completed projects across Hong Kong. His work has been featured in local design publications and recognized by the Hong Kong Institute of Interior Designers. But what matters most to Michael? Seeing teams work better in spaces he’s designed. Watching people feel more creative, more focused, more connected to their colleagues.

At Workspace Atelier Limited, he leads the design consultation team. He’s also developed comprehensive courses on office styling and workspace optimization. Teaching isn’t a side project for Michael—it’s fundamental to his mission. He believes professional design education should be accessible to business owners and managers, not just other designers.

Design Philosophy

Michael’s approach combines three essential elements: observation, strategy, and creativity. He doesn’t start by sketching designs. He starts by understanding the space and the people who’ll work in it.

“Every space tells a story. Your job as a designer is to listen to that story, understand what it wants to become, and help it get there without losing its character.”

— Michael Lam

His methodology follows a clear progression. First, he conducts thorough site analysis—understanding the building’s history, the company’s workflow, the team’s actual needs (not just what they think they want). Second, he develops a strategic plan grounded in data: traffic flow patterns, natural light availability, acoustic requirements, budget constraints. Finally, he brings creativity to the execution, finding elegant solutions to complex problems.

What sets his work apart? He refuses shortcuts. Yes, you can furnish an office cheaply. But cheap solutions create expensive problems—high turnover, low morale, wasted space. Michael designs for longevity. Every material choice, every color decision, every layout adjustment is made with the space’s future in mind.

He’s also pragmatic about Hong Kong’s realities. Space is expensive. Budgets are tight. Timelines are compressed. These constraints aren’t obstacles to work around—they’re the parameters that define good design. They force creativity. They demand efficiency. And they’re exactly what make his solutions valuable.
